By setting a SMART goal that reflects your desire for deeper connection, you’re not just adding another task to your to-do list—you’re cultivating a life that’s more aligned, more present, and more whole.

Deepen Your Spiritual Connection This Summer with SMART Goals~

As a Nationally Board Certfied Health & Wellness Coach, I find it valuable to revisit the fundamentals from time to time—and lately, I’ve been reflecting on the power of SMART goals. I often help clients set meaningful intentions that align with their values and overall well-being. With the warmth of summer on the horizon, it’s a natural time to pause, refocus, and reconnect with what matters most.

Many of us long for a stronger sense of spiritual connection—whether that means feeling more grounded, opening to inner wisdom, or deepening our relationship with something greater than ourselves. But like any area of personal growth, creating space for the sacred requires intention. That’s where SMART goals come in.

SMART is an acronym to help us move from vague wishes to grounded, achievable outcomes:

  • S – Specific: Clearly define what you want to experience or cultivate.

  • M – Measurable: Identify how you’ll track your progress.

  • A – Achievable: Choose something realistic and doable in your current season of life.

  • R – Relevant: Make sure the goal aligns with your personal values and spiritual path.

  • T – Time-bound: Set a timeframe to stay motivated and accountable.

✨ Turning Intention into Practice

Let’s say you’ve been yearning to feel more spiritually connected but aren’t sure where to start. A common goal might sound like:
“I want to feel more connected spiritually.”

While that’s a beautiful aspiration, it’s a bit too vague to guide your actions. Using the SMART approach, we can reshape it into something that invites meaningful, sustainable change. For example:

“I will set aside 10 minutes each morning for quiet reflection or meditation, five days a week, for the next six weeks, to strengthen my connection to my inner wisdom and spiritual guidance.”

This version is:

  • Specific (10 minutes of reflection or meditation)

  • Measurable (five days per week)

  • Achievable (short daily practice, flexible enough to integrate into most routines)

  • Relevant (supports a desire for spiritual connection)

  • Time-bound (six-week commitment)

Even small, consistent practices—lighting a candle with intention, spending time in nature, journaling dreams, or reading spiritual texts—can create a ripple effect in your inner world. The key is consistency, reflection, and making space for the sacred in the everyday.

Here are a few more examples to inspire your summer intention:

  • “I will attend one spiritual or wellness circle per month this summer to feel more supported and connected to a like-hearted community.”

  • “I will journal three evenings a week, using prompts to explore my spiritual beliefs and values, over the next two months.”

  • “I will read one book on spiritual growth by August 31st to deepen my understanding of purpose and meaning.”
